RIP APT, devoured by the Comcast DevilsSpawn (CCDS)

By now you have heard, Alameda Power has sold the Telecom portion to evile Comcast DevilsSpawn (CCDS) . I had CCDS 'services' years ago before I switched to the new APT. Everything was crappy: cable and customer service. I was thrilled with APT services in both TV and Internet.

I feel like a refugee , forced into Comcast DevilsSpawn (CCDS) for at least a year at my current rates for internet.

to date they have given me these runarounds:

BILLING
1. Couldn't pay my bill at APT Grand Ave - they sent me to CCDS in Marina Village.
2.After standing in line for 20 minutes, they wouldnt take my payment either, and told me to wait for new bill with a new account number.
3.After getting the bill TWO weeks ago, I immediately and successfully paid online - too successfully. They got TWO identical payments.
4.Today I received a yellow overdue notice for two months.
5.Charged me for 'installation' - then had to reverse the charges.

SERVICE
1. The Marina Villiage demoness demanded that I schedule an appt. ( at no charge sez she) so my change over would go smoothly - she "didn't want to guarantee that everything would work fine if I waited for the mass changeover." So I had to stay home and wait for the install minion to come.
2. Minion arrives, says I don't need the cable box since my tv is digital and they will bill me for it. Now some channels are not working (grey snow). A call to service resolved that I DO need that box afterall. I get it for free. I had to set up ANOTHER appointment for them to come install it.
3. Took him 25 minutes just on the modem (MAC address call in to tech support.) I have to reboot the modem once a week because of stale handles.
4. FOUR favorite channels are missing - the person I spoke to on the phone lied about the line up. I have to pay even more money to get just the Alameda council meetings.

Once my year of APT rates are gone I am seriously looking at satellite dish and ATT.

Ok, now I'm angry. I was switched over today. It was really hard communicating with the technicians because one spoke broken English and the other only knew how to say "Yes" and "No".

Me: "How long is it going to take because I need to pick someone up soon?" Him: "Yes".

They came at 2 p.m. and didn't leave until 4:30. My house has two tivo boxes, two desktops, one laptop, and two gaming consoles that rely on internet connection. They went about switching my internet over to Comcast (code for destroying my network).

I own my modem rather than renting. They were having trouble getting my modem to connect to the new Comcast network. They asked me if I wouldn't mind renting one of their modems until I can buy a new one. I'm already pissed that I'm losing G4 and IFC. Now they want me to rent a modem when the one I had was working fine before they got there. Then I heard one of them say, "Oh no! I no have modern (sic) in truck."

I asked them to power cycle the modem, which I wrongly assumed they were doing in the first place. They were able to get it working.

Next they tried to hook up my router. Fail! They spent the next 2 hours plugging and unplugging different cables into both modem and router. I kept telling them to reset the factory defaults on the router. They said they did. They gave up and said, "Problem with rooter (sic). We no fix rooter." Then they left.

I untangled the mass of Cat 5 cable they left and plugged them back in their appropriate slots. Reset router to factory defaults (turns out the technicians DIDN'T reset defaults like they said they did), power cycled modem and router. Network is back online. Took me all of five minutes.

yesterday I got a call from comcast's computer, to remind me that I had an appointment today, it said to press 2 to cancel it. I pressed 2.

so of course at 9am, the doorbell rings and the cable guy knocks on the door, I told him what was going on and he left, then he came back and said that none on the id numbers for my equipment were in the system, so he collected the numbers, checked that I really did have the service I said i did, and in passing told me that in a few months they are planning on switching everyone over to the APT infrastructure because it is newer and in better shape.

after he left I attempted to get the multiple ip-addresses going by rebooting the modem, no such luck. I call the guy I talked to last week, and he transferred me to a internet specialist, who proceeded to ask silly questions like am I running vista or xp. eventually I got her to the point where she sent the right bits to the modem, which made it work as expected. so finally Vonage is up, the house network is up, bot settop boxes work . I have no idea what my bill is going to look like, it seems that in the process, I ended up with two accounts. so we'll see what they do next, I'm guessing that the saga is not over.

So, I called the Comcast transition number Monday, to make sure that when they switched me that I'd have multiple ip-addresses.
The guy on the phone scheduled me for switchover this coming tuesday, and supposedly setup the ip-addresses, and my cable package.

Saturday afternoon, one of my party guests brings in a pile of stuff that says that Comcast has been out and has changed me over.
I check, and neither cable box is working right, and the network is not up, which means of course that the phones are not working.
After the party, I start working to fix things. I power cycled every thing, the only thing tha t responded well was th regular cable box.

I ended up making two calls to CC, luckily the transition team is on 24/7. lots of hold time a dropped call, 4 different people and almost 2 hours, almost everything is up, the multiple ip addresses didn't happen and the server that allows it to happen seems to be down, so I'll have to reboot the modem tomorrow and hope for the best so i can get my Vonage voip box running.

the good news is that the network speeds are FAST, one test said I got 18Mb/s down and 3.5Mb/s up

it'll be interesting to see what happens on Tuesday, Comcast will probably want to change things around again.

todays call to Comcast re the scoop on the transition & costs.

first, comcast is more expensive. if you sign up with them (transfer) they will lock in your AP&T rates. Comcast is $9 more on the cable basic level and $5 more on the internet level. this adds up over the months! whoa. you don't need to prepay then get a credit back. cable is prepaid so you have to either pay the amount due for the next period, or wait until you are switched over.

second. it does take someone to go to you house and switch over an outside "box" not string new lines etc. i guess they have their own tracking devices. seems reasonable considering.

and finally they have a special "transition" team and she says that the only other alternative is the dish people. no other hard-cable company is on alameda at the moment.

After standing in line for 20 minutes, she suggested I NOT pay until I am 'switched over' since they would have to send me a refund check for the part of the month that would overlap. WTF? Why not just issue me a credit? She also told me that I have to make an appt. to have the techs come out and physically switch me over since they are ditching the "archaic APT cable system." Uh, I was living here 6 years ago when they dug up our street to put in the new cable, so how archaic can it be, really.
