Just got this notice from Jeff at Farmstead:

"Acquacotta
I am proud to announce that my friend, colleague, and ex-employee John Couacaud is finally opening his dream restaurant, Acquacotta, 1544 Webster near Lincoln (site of the old Alameda Saloon). (tel: 523-2220)

John has been working on this contemporary Italian eatery for what seems like forever, and his eclectic take on great food is sure to please. He stopped by the other day and let me sample some of his cooking. Mamma Mia, this ex-Oliveto chef can sure cook!!

I particularly loved his take on Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto San Daniele (grilled), the Arancini (fried risotto balls stuffed with Fontina val d'Aosta), and Stracotta di Manzo (a fancy name for some killer pot roast of beef braised in Nebbiolo wine!!) His all-Italian wine list tops out at $40 or so.

He opens next weekend (Friday, 28 March), so run, don't walk to what will definitely be a destination for foodies, Bay Area-wide."

Normally I'm kinda "meh" about Italian restaurants, as I don't care for pasta that much. I'm not eating any carbs at all these days, so I've got to admit the description of the pot roast and asparagus has piqued my interest. And I can walk there!

I've heard good things about this place, mainly from the Farmstead cheesemongers. I'm hoping it lives up to the hype. I haven't found an Italian restaurant in the East Bay that I've liked since I moved from Wisconsin last year. Chicago and Milwaukee Italian food ruined me for tolerating mediocre variations of the cuisine.

Their menu is inside the new Alameda phone books being delivered this week. Looks interesting if pretty pricey. It's also nuelle Itlaian, not traditional.

I went there this past weekend. The food tasted excellent. They service was very good as it seemed like they had too many employees so I never had to wait for anything. My only gripe was it sure was pricey. I had the soup and pot roast. My wife had soup and salad. We had two ice teas to drink. Our bill came out to be $70. Throw in a $15 tip that is $85 for dinner that night. Man, that is a lot for little Alameda.

I went to a fairly fancy north beach restaurnt last night. Two appetizers, soup, salad, I had a margarita pizza and my wife had scampi. It was $60. That is too bad because I really liked the food at accoquatta(spelling ?) and it was local. I would really like to frequent the place but with their menu prices being that out of control I dont plan on a return trip.

I haven't tried Acquacotta yet, but at a certain point, gas (or BART/the O and Muni) and travel time figures in--maybe it comes out worth the extra to not have to leave the Island just for dinner.

I dont really mind if one place is a litle more expensive than another I just dont like to get the shaft. If I think I am being charged excessively or unfairly I will travel. I really dont think NorthBeach is that far. It is like 5 miles away. My car gets 25 miles per gallon so it costs me like a dollar in gas to get there. Plus the atmsophere with all the cafes and stuff I think is nicer.

We had dinner there last night, and were pretty pleased. Excellent food, attentive (but not over-bearing) service. As another poster mentioned, it's not cheap, but it is cheaper (and a lot less hassle) than driving over to North Beach. We'll be back.

Our favorite restaurant on the island, though, is still Asena (www.welcometoasena.com/), downtown. We've been there a dozen or more times, and always had excellent food and warm, friendly service.
