Now I understand this town is really really conscious of pedestrians. When half your town is full of senior citizens who will fail dementia tests if they ever tried to get their driver's license again, of course those people aren't going to drive.
No I am not talking about those people.
I am talking about the other half of Alameda. The people who aren't about to die within the next 4 years. The obese mother of 4. The young Alameda High student who is wearing a "dirty blanket" jacket (I believe the youth call them "hoodies"). The guy in his mid-30's wearing a suit.
It doesn't matter who they are, you just jump out in the street.
Even the crosswalks are a funny deal in your town. The way I understood it, you look both ways and then cross. But your town, it's cross and pray to god that it isn't a senior citizen behind the wheel of that Chevette.
I am in your god forsaken dump everyday of the week and once a day, I will have to slam on my brakes because Mrs. Before (the woman in the Nutra System commercial BEFORE the diet) decided to jump into the street. She will even have the nerve to glare at me as if I did something wrong. No lady, it is you that is wrong. 1. You live in this stupid town called Alameda. 2. You're fat.
I had one incident over there near Washington Park where some guy flipped me off because I didn't stop for him at the crosswalk. Even though I was going slower than the posted speed limit of 25. Even though I was almost 5 feet away from the cross walk (too close for me to stop at the crosswalk). Even though had I stopped, I would have had to slam on my brakes since I was way too close to the crosswalk. No, he wanted me to stop and he flipped me off. Now any other city with alot less of the invincibility juice running through their blood wouldn't have cared because I was too close. But in your filthy town? Nope, he wanted me to stop.
I don't understand it either where this mentality comes from. Is it taught in your schools? Do Alameda parents shove this down their children's throats?
I'd actually like to see a statistic about pedestrian's getting hit by cars in your dump. Is it really cars driving above the speed limit or is it pedestrians thinking they're untouchable?
I'd really like to know what is up with the Alameda pedestrians...

Re: What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 2:37 PMAre you really looking for a productive conversation on this subject, or is this just an attempt to enflame the fair citizens of this so called "god-forsaken dump"?
If it is the latter, there are many bridges and a tunnel available for your exit, sir. Feel free to leave anytime... -

Strangely, I can't recall the last time someone walked in front of my car in Alameda. Oakland, on the other hand... -

well... now you are just generalizing
If that was the case, you would have had thousands of people walking in front of your car.

Re: What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 9:06 PMFrank, I think most people would agree that it is not cool for pedestrains to just step out into traffic.
BUT, calling every resident of an entire city a moron and oblivious to our surroundings is, well... moronic!

Re: What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 7:29 PMFailure to stop at a cross walk for pedestrian is against the law and you can be given a citation. IN ANY CITY OF CALIFORNIA, not just Alameda.
www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/hdbk/...pedestrians
* Respect the right-of-way of pedestrians. Always stop for any pedestrian crossing at corners or other crosswalks and at corners with or without traffic lights, whether or not the crosswalks are marked by painted lines.
* Pedestrians have the right of way at corners with or without traffic lights, whether or not the crosswalks are marked by painted white lines.
Maybe you should get you facts before you shout off your mouth. Otherwise you sound like a fucking moron. -

Re: What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 8:41 PMI know what the handbook says. However if I am a pedestrian, I look both ways before I cross. I don't just jump into the street with cockiness that the driver will stop. As I stated, half your moronic town is a bunch of decrepit old people who are one runny nose away from death. I wouldn't trust those drivers to stop ANY crosswalk.
Furthermore, my fellow moronic Alamedan, you posted an excerpt from the handbook regarding corners and crosswalks. I was not only talking about crosswalks but the entire street itself.
But go ahead and cross the street without looking. I am sure you can trust your fellow Alamedans to stop for you even if you just jump out..

Hey - how do you all feel about the fancy new cross walks popping up all over the island? -
-
Re: warning
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 9:12 PMAs a frequent (and careful) pedestrian, I like them very much, particularly the one that leads away from the lower part of Washington Park. My daughter and I prefer to walk home down Burbank rather than Central, and crossing there at dusk used to be a lot scarier.

I like them.
Sometimes you get so caught up in what the cars are doing around you on Park that it's hard to notice the people... especially at night.
Although... I think it's dumb to have a crosswalk where there isn't a stop sign or traffic light. -

Tue, January 22, 2008 - 8:26 AMI can read thanks.
If that's your green light to jump into the street, then go ahead and jump.
I am just pointing out that you and every other ignorant alamedan thinks it's ok to jump out into the street.
Most people would agree that it should be the responsibility of both pedestrian and driver to be aware of their surroundings. Yet in your half witted town, it's all on the drivers.
Attempting to justify to me that jumping out in the street is "a-ok" speaks volumes about the town's arrogance.
Let's make it clear, I never said driver's could speed or that they should be not be aware of pedestrians.
I am not sure why I am met with all of these responses that drivers should be corteous to pedestrians.
What you imbecilic Alamedans are telling me, is that it should be OK for a pedestrian to jump out into traffic and expect cars to stop on a dime. So if it's ok for a pedestrian to jump out into the road where cars drive, I guess then it would be ok for a car to suddenly and unexpectedly turn into a sidewalk.
Of course it wouldn't be ok for a car to jump into a sidewalk....
You know what? Nevermind, I've realize who my audience is. I am speaking to a bunch of low brow, half witted Alamedans. If you look at my posts, I am basically repeating everything I am saying. -

Howzabout next time someone tries the "OMG, ALAMEDA, YOUUUU SUUUUUUUUCK!!!" (haven't seen a post like that since my Usenet days, which ended 7 or 8 years ago!), we all discuss our favorite local Alameda haunts, as if that was the topic. -

Re: What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 4:19 PMMy mother was hit and critically injured by a driver who was not paying attention in Alameda back in 1994. To this day she is still suffering from those injuries. I am highly offended by this original poster and am thankful he couldn't stand the heat and unsubscribed. What selfishness and arrogance.
The support from the police department, paramedics, and local community was extremely welcome and refreshing. I can't imagine experiencing that in any of the neighboring cities. What we have here is something special and I'm glad there are those that can recognize that. My life might take me out of Alameda but my heart is always there. -

Re: What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:34 PMwhat is it about posting comments by email that seems to bring out the inner obnoxious asshole in people with too much time on their hands? just type out a bunch of flaming drivel and hit "send & offend". it's so easy. the pedestrian/car equation works both ways you know. many of us who live in alameda consider ourselves lucky in that we can actually walk or bike for many errands instead of firing up the polluting global warming killing machine known as the automobile. in fact alameda was a fully functioning city without cars at all a hundred years ago. try walking somewhere here in town and step into the street at a corner or crosswalk and see how many drivers sail right on by in violation of state law.
This does not give pedestrians the right to jump out in the middle of the block, or ignore the reality of how long it takes a car to stop of course. there just needs to be a little common sense and respect from both sides. my own personal pet traffic peeve is drivers who regard bicyclists as figments of their imagination. when i'm installed as emperor every driver will be required to spend one day a month on a bike. you can bet they will be a little more aware and considerate of bicyclists once they're back in the gas hog. This problem will probably start to ease up once gasoline hits $10/gallon and you see more bikes than cars. viva la isle of style! -

Thu, January 31, 2008 - 4:47 PMHear! Hear! bring back the trolley line. One that went in a loop from one side of the island to another would do it. -

No kidding. SUCH a great idea. And remarkably... the tracks (mostly) still exist. Unfortunately, the city has other ideas. Sure wish someone had the energy to work up a proposal on this. Once the base is redeveloped there will be a metric ton of new traffic running up and down the island. Not to mention the added bridge and tunnel traffic. Ouch.
