This is so horrible! Alameda's first homicide of the year.
www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi
A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed at an Alameda park during an apparent robbery attempt, police said today.
The girl, an Alameda resident whose name was withheld, was shot at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at Washington Park, located on Central Ave near Webster Street in the island city.
She was with friends when she was shot in the playground area of the park, which is popular among sports enthusiasts and dog owners in the normally tranquil island city. No arrests have been made.
"I am personally stunned and professionally stunned," said Alameda police Lt. Art Fuentes. "I feel that it is a tragedy to lose the life of such a young lady and, as a parent, I couldn't fathom the loss and feelings that her family is going through."
The girl was with about 10 friends at the park when five or six male juveniles whom they didn't recognize approached them in a robbery attempt, Fuentes said.
One of the assailants was armed with a gun and fired five or six shots in an upward motion before firing one last shot that hit the girl in her back, Fuentes said.
"We believe she was in a defensive posture at the time of the shooting," Fuentes said.
One of her friends ran to a nearby officer issuing a traffic citation and told him about the shooting, which has devastated the girl's family and friends. "It's such a raw tragedy," Fuentes said.
The girl was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where she was pronounced dead. The Alameda County coroner is scheduled to conduct an autopsy this morning.
Alameda police cordoned off the area and searched AC Transit bus stops and the 12th Street BART station in downtown Oakland in search of the assailants.
Washington Park is not known for such violence. It is popular for picnics, barbecues, baseball, basketball and its enclosed dog park and is within walking distance to the city's shoreline.
The slaying is Alameda's first homicide of the year. The city reported two killings in 2006, none in 2005 and one slaying in 2004.

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 8:54 AMThe cops were probably too busy doing & eating doughnuts out on the base tarmac to patrol the Alameda parks. They seem to have a lot of time when it comes to producing those fancy dioramas on the backs of their motorcycles. Perhaps if they cut down on the extra-curricular activities I see them indulging in so much, that girl might still be alive.
The only time I ever see the local pigs doing their jobs is when the are busting people going 36 MPH on Otis wile everyone else speeds down my tiny street at 65 mph.
Notice that in reports, one of the victims ran up to an officer giving someone a ticket. Seriously, the Alameda police force is nothing more than a bunch of meter maids slacking because of Alameda’s “sleepy” reputation. I see shit going down on that island ALL the time & the police are never around. Unless of course you live in the fancy areas with the really expensive housing, then they are on you like flys to shit if your skin is slightly dark… -

Thu, November 1, 2007 - 9:07 AMWhy didn't he hear the gunshots if he was nearby, I wonder? I'd want to do bad things to him if it were my daughter who was killed yards away while he wrote a traffic citation. -

that sucks.
i went to school with Art.
i have to say, i agree with Icky; island cops are pretty much like Clancy on the Simpsons. -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 5:19 AMI was at that park only hours earlier. This is a freakish, sad thing. My best to her family.
Yes, the police here are a bit slow. They were probably busy hiding behind the 25MPH speed traps waiting to pull us all over for driving 26MPH. -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 10:17 AMThis incident still has me fuming. I went onto SFgate & all everyone could talk about was how it was some interloper from Oakland with veiled racist comments. Oops, then it turned out the perps were Asian!
Fuck Alameda, the lazy bigoted pigs & the racist ignorant residents… -

I read that you are fuming over this, but that is no excuse to slam the island as a whole, nor it's denziens.
This tragedy is quite shocking to us all. -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 2:30 PMI was slamming the racist of Alameda, the people afraid of change & other races. not the entire populace. Over the last 10 years on the island, I’ve seen a lot of unforgivable behavior. Granted, it’s not as fucked up as when the military was still on the base, back when the cops would escort you off the island or beat you down if you were the wrong color & seen crossing into Alameda from Oakland… -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Fri, November 2, 2007 - 9:06 PMAs a life-long Alamedan, I take offence to the statement "Fuck Alameda" I realize you didn't mean ALL of Alameda, but that's that way it comes across when you say something like that... -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 3:00 PMActually, I think the cops have done a pretty good job on this. They have thrown a lot of resources at it, resulting in multiple arrests today. It was a horrible thing to happen, but at least violent crimes are rare enough in Alameda that when they do happen, the police have the resources to respond.

Sat, November 3, 2007 - 11:06 AMwhen I was like 16 I got robbed and beat up in that park by 3 black dudes.
so this was about 12 years ago.
just thought I would throw that out there -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Sat, November 3, 2007 - 5:03 PMand the fact that they were black has WHAT to do with anything?
I don't care if the person who shot that girl was green, purple or plaid, she was 15 friggin years old and now she's dead... dead because some little punk shot her with a gun... that is just plain fucked up, it's fucked up if it happens in Richmond, or Oakland or anywhere...
When i was "like 16" i used to hang out with my friends and drink in Alameda parks all the time... now I'm a father of 2 young girls raising them in in the same small town I grew up in.
This aint a race issue, it's a stupid, senseless violence issue, it doesn't make any difference what race or creed the victim OR the murder is... the fact is guns kill, and it's fucked up. -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Sat, November 3, 2007 - 9:39 PMActually, the fact that both were asian may have something to do with it...
I lived in San Jo a long time, where much of the robbery crime was asian on asian. A police friend of mine said that these punks prey on new immigrants, counting on the fact that:
1. they are too intimidated to ask a foreign justice system for help- often such help is "bought and paid for" in their home country, and
2. the language barrier will mean they won't get the follow through.
From all reports, she was Mongolian and her family immigrated less than 10 years ago. Also, why did these guys come from out of the area to a park in Alameda? Sounds a little suspicious, like they knew there was going to be a "partay" in the park (myspace invite anyone?), and figured they would score easily, but panicked and shot someone by mistake.
Very sad, all in all. But I suspect the "randomness" will in due time play out to me more than it is portrayed now.
Lets hope APD asks for help in solving this one. They excel at " community policing" but the solving hard stuff seems to elude them - probably not enough practice.
I saw the night vigil and the candles. Have a kind passing, Ichinkhorloo. Om mani padme hum. -

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Mon, November 5, 2007 - 9:01 PMI've been hanging in Alameda a lot more in the past 5 months recently after not living there over 10 years ago, so much, in fact, that I was only a few blocks away from said incident.... It was odd to feel kind of shocked but simultaneously nonplussed that I was so shocked, since Oakland's homicide rate is way higher. I have to say that while the homicide rate is exponentially lower in Alameda than in Oakland, there's still lots of stuff going on that ain't always so cool in our oh so quiet Alameda....of the 3 larger more violent incidents that happened to me when I was near 15 (all of which I was very lucky, and came away relatively unscathed) 2 of these occurred in our oh so idyllic Alameda, versus big bad Oakland. Where am I going with this....shoot, I dunno....I guess it's weird how shocked we all get about how awful this is; and yet, why aren't our responses so similar when it happens in Oakland? It's barely separated by the estuary, and yet sometimes it's like a completely different world.

Re: Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 8:03 AMdude dont over react, the FACT that they were black had NOTHING to do with it.
But it did happen to be a FACT and when telling stories you usually include those.
and as someone said below the Asian factor can be a HUGE factor.
Growing up here in Oakland and being white I hung out with mostly Asians and they do have interracial disputes amongst blue claiming gangs. Shit goes down and often a lot less senseless then you know of. They have underlying issues.
even now I live in a pretty Asian hood and they have had a few big fights or battles right out front of my house amongst each other.
but anyways I was just telling my short story and you went off the hook as if I'm racist overly protecting how "unracist" you are.

Three nabbed in Halloween night slaying
Alameda police say Oakland youths have gang affiliations
By Peter Hegarty, STAFF WRITER
Article Last Updated: 11/07/2007 06:32:48 AM PST
Alameda police Lt. Art Fuentes speaks during a press conference announcing the arrest of three suspects in the murder of Ichinkhorloo Bayarsaikhan. (Dean Coppola/MediaNews)ALAMEDA — Three Oakland teenagers arrested in connection with the slaying of a 15-year-old girl at an Alameda park on Halloween will each face a murder charge, police said.
The boys were taken into custody Tuesday morning after investigators served arrest and search warrants in at least two locations in Oakland, including a residence in the city's Laurel district.
Weapons and ammunition were also seized during the searches, including a .22-caliber handgun that police said may have been the one used to kill Ichinkhorloo Bayarsaikhan.
"We are still early into it, but we are confident that we have recovered the weapon," said Alameda police Lt. Art Fuentes.
A teenage girl also was detained during the searches and subsequently released.
Bayarsaikhan, a junior at Alameda High School, was hanging out with about 10 friends at Washington Park when five teenage boys approached and tried to rob them, police said.
The shooter fired five or six shots — some over the heads of the victims — and Ichinkhorloo was hit once in the back.
Investigators were still searching for two additional suspects Tuesday, Fuentes said.
The boys arrested are 15, 16 and 17 years old. Their names were not disclosed because theyare minors. Police said all three have gang affiliations.
A mother of one of the boys told CBS 5 news that her son had never been arrested.
"No, no," she told a reporter for KPIX. "I don't know what happened."
