Of course many of the policies of the Park street merchants assn. ( Pillow Park Plaza the leader here) and their goons Johnson and Materessi, have driven out many quirky local businesses ( the used/new book store, antique stores) over the course of this project in the name of modernization. These businesses have in many cases been replaced by CHAIN (quiznos, starfucks, tomtino,) stores which then, ironically, does not make Alameda UNIQUE enough for people to drive here as a destination.

Sadly, we the taxpayers will pay for it, as it all collapses financially in three years when the newness has worn off. IF they had gone to the compromise suggested, three theaters, two less floors onthe parking garage, it would not a such an eyesore.

I'm 37 now, and I like movies a lot, I like the idea of walking to or riding my bike to a movie theater in Alameda so I've always been 100% for it (yes I know there is the Central Cinema, but dirty couches in an old mortuary just doesn't do it for me --well, maybe for art or cult films...with beer)

Do I like the giant building? I don't know yet, we see when its finished...
I wish they could've just renovated the old theatre, BUT if building the new part HAD to be done, I mean if that's what it takes to bring first run movies to the island, oh well...
Alamedans have ALWAYS feared change, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing.

In this case though, I personally just want to watch movies IN Alameda, so I'm willing to give it a try.

ALSO, if a movie theatre can boost nightlife (restaurants, bars, lounges, PEDESTRIANS, community?) then I'm all for it...

Maybe it'll be cool, maybe not, but I'll definately go when it opens, Alameda needs a movie theater, and least we still have the old theater and the big neon Alameda sign...the old and the new...

I feel in general that the shopping districts of Alameda aren't made for pedestrians (I HATE going from the main part of Southshore -- I don't use the other name--to the Post Office, for example.)

The THEORY of getting tax money into Alameda from other cities is a good one, but the reality will either be more congestion (it's a small island with a LOT of people on it already) or an ugly structure getting not-enough use. Neither one is charming.
