Hi everyone. I'm thinking of moving to Alameda, from Berkeley. Have toured around the island a bit. Wondering, though, if it's colder or warmer there than Berkeley. (I tend to run cold, and like heat.) One of my friends told me it's often windy and cool. Hard to get a sense today, when it's warm and sunny everywhere.
Also just wondering if I'll get tired of all the driving (I work in SF - not downtown - and also spend a lot of time in Berkeley). But I suppose you all can't really answer that.
The place I'm looking at is on the west side of the island, off Webster.
Thanks.

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Tue, June 10, 2008 - 4:57 PMok, I think I just answered my own question - the one about the weather, not the driving - by looking up averages on accuweather.com. Bummer. Looks like, on average, Alameda is much cooler in the summer (although it doesn't get quite as cool at night). Great for people who like that, I suppose. -

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Tue, June 10, 2008 - 5:32 PMyes it is colder and windier than Berk. It's also more middle of the road, and more family oriented and more home owners than rentals.
There is no rent protection like Berkeley. -

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Wed, June 11, 2008 - 10:57 AMYeah, I was preparing myself for the cultural differences, and the lack of rent control. (The place I'll be moving into in Berkeley - it was a choice between a place in Alameda and a place in Berkeley) isn't rent controlled, either, unfortunately (single family house, rent control for these was done away w/ by Costa-Hawkins Act, I believe.) But I do hate being cold - one of the reasons I don't want to move back to SF. -

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Thu, June 12, 2008 - 10:47 AMI work in Berkeley and live in Alameda, and I've lived in Berkeley.
Alameda gets less fog than Berkeley, but between the wind and the moderating effects of being surrounded by water it tends to be cooler. however, on a totally subjective level, Alameda seems warmer.

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 8:36 PMIt totally depends on what part of Berkeley.
It's much less foggy in Alameda.
I think it's much warmer than where I lived in North Berkeley. -

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 4:06 PMI would agree with North Berkeley being colder foggier, like around Kensington and in the hills. -

Mon, June 16, 2008 - 7:07 PMAh, yes...the fickle finger of fog...

Re: thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s
Sat, June 21, 2008 - 7:59 PMI'm in Alameda and have lived here about 10 yrs now. I find living on the bay moderates the temp just a bit. You rarely see weather predictions for Alameda but I find if I average Oakland and SF its just about right.
If its an option, take the ferry to SF. That's what I do. It is the best commute in the world!
