My husband wants to open a deli on the island. We live off Webster, and have seen the recent changes. The deli next to Paganos is gone, and we're wondering, is it a good area for business, or should we focus our efforts on the west side?

Webster doesn't get the foot traffic that Park or the shopping centers do, so I wonder if it's the best locale for a deli. Is Demitra's still open on Central across from McD's?

The only restaurants we go on Webster are Tillies (best waffles ever) and Califa (taqueria) and even that is infrequent. Sometimes I'm dragged to Dim Sum at East Ocean, but mostly so my boyfriend can try and make me eat tripe again. Katsu is usually half-full, and Otaez seems to make their money off the booze more than the food.

A deli on the site of the old hot dog shop on Park would be nifty, imo. I'd love a really good deli in town. I wouldn't even mind if you had to tart it up Genova style to get the yuppies in.

I think Demitra's finally gave up the ghost. Good thing, too. I used to live in the blue building next door and I never went there after my first 2 tries.
I go to the New Zealander a lot more than I'd care to admit, but it's mostly because it's sorta become a central meeting place for my friends and the bartenders are really great. Katsu does nothing for me, but Yokohama is pretty wonderful. Otaez I like more now than I did when they first opened (get the whole fried fish with diablo sauce), but I rarely think about going there. I love Califa, nice people and good food.
There's also a nice bar crawl if you have a mind. Start at the New Zealander where you can get dinner AND they now have Absinth. Move down the street to the Fireside which, since it's reopened, is damned swank. Then, as the evening starts to spiral out of control, hit the Shamrock. Terrifying, but also wonderful with, strangely, some of the nicest bartenders I've ever met.
Oh, the new Vietnamese place is ok, I think. Get the beef stew instead of the Pho. I iknow it seems counterintuitive, but trust me.
Stay away from Wally's, it makes the Shamrock look gentile.
      Nation's is.. fine.
Albert's would be my preference over Tillies, but only by a little.

And there you are, Kelly's Webster Street. :)

Dimitra's (the one on Central, anyway) is going to be a Mountain Mike's Pizza.

Is the Dimitra's on Park still there? I haven't been to either in a while, but I remember thinking the one on Park was a lot better.

I agree on Otaez, especially the fish, with the wonderfully fresh garnish. Their Sunday Brunch Buffet is really special, too, a combo of old fashioned diner bacon 'n' eggs, a nice selection of fresh fruit and Mexican food likerefried beans and tortillas, followed up with as many sweet pastries as you can eat.

Um, the "old hot dog shop" is still in business.

That is if you were referring to the Pampered Pup.

When did that reopen? I peeped inside not too long ago and it looked abandoned. *shrug* They had good hot dogs, and now that the place in Marina Village went out of business......

The Fireside is now swank? Oh dear goddess, I think my BF may cry.

The New Zealander has great bartenders, but I have not been impressed by the food.

But a good deli -- yummmmm. I'd love a good Italian deli, or even a good Jewish deli. Some place with good fresh food and friendly staff.

I live a few blocks from Webster and would love to have a good deli over there. The existing Deli (Domenico's I think) is okay but I agree it's past its prime. I don't know if it would be too yup-crunch for alameda, but one of my all time favorite sandwich shops is atlas cafe in SF:

    www.atlascafe.net/menu/sandwiches.html

healthy and delicious sandwiches yeah baby. I would go to a place like that on webster once a week at least.

Ideally you'd want to be near the parking lot next to calafia -- they have a farmer's market once a week and you could leverage that.

I think it would also be a good idea to advertise over at windriver -- they're a big employer and you might get a decent regular lunch crowd if they like ya.
