Yep. APT makes a profit selling power. They have lost BIG money on their foray into telecom. The city council has been all over them to cut their losses by getting out of that market and back to what they do well.

I have to admit that I'm very curious about what made it so hard to compete in the ISP market though. Maybe the cost of laying new lines or fiber?

I had Dish/DSL for two years here and it was great, if a little slow on the internet side. Dish has the best DVR of any service, hands down. I just moved to a place that doesn't allow Dish, so picked AP&T which became comcast before they even hooked it all up. The internet is FAST but their DVR's really suck. Sofar no outages at all.

I've had no trouble at all with my DSL here - I regularly get download speed at the top of the range I'm paying for.

I get my (PacBell) DSL through Sonic.net, which helps on the customer-service end of things - Sonic actually has a clue, and if it really is PacBell's problem, they know how to get results from PacBell.

Here's the news from AP&T:

http://www.alamedapt.com/internet/index.html

To All Our Customers, Supporters, and Neighbors:
IMPORTANT NOTICE OF CHANGES FOR AP&T CABLE TELEVISION AND INTERNET SERVICES

Alameda Power & Telecom has sold its telecommunications business line to Comcast of Alameda, Incorporated, which has purchased all customer accounts and will be responsible for serving you, effective 11/21/08.

Ten years ago, Alameda launched its telecommunications business to provide local services to meet the demands of the community at that time. The landscape has changed dramatically since then, and these services remain challenged to support themselves on an ongoing basis.

Alameda Power & Telecom has provided safe, reliable, high-value electric service to the community for over 120 years. Electricity is our core business, and we are proud of our success in providing electricity that is 80% carbon-free. We look forward to focusing on this essential public service and continuing to meet your electricity needs.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU:

    * Generally, you will continue to receive services substantially similar to those you have received. Your cable box, cable card, and Internet modem all will continue to work, and you do not need to change equipment.

    * Your next bill will be from Comcast. Please be aware your billing and due dates may change in the future. Comcast soon will send its own welcome to you as a new customer providing more detail.

    * You will need to take some action in the future to ensure that your account remains current. For example, if you pay online through a financial services provider, you will need to update your records to show Comcast as your new payee. If you pay using a recurring credit card charge and have any changes, you will need to update this information with Comcast.

    * Comcast has assured that alamedanet.net email addresses will remain active and available to you for at least 12 months.

Click for Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Please know that we are working hard to make this transition as seamless as possible. Effective 11/21/08, more information is available for customers at 510-567-9350 or via a toll-free line, (866) 623-9443. Another resource is the Comcast web site, www.comcast.com.

We appreciate the support from our customers, and thank you for having allowed us to serve you. We look forward to continuing to provide you with standard-setting electric service.

Yes, it bothers me, especially as I've never known APT to brown out or screw up, whereas I hear that it happens with Comcast fairly frequently.

That, and the principal of the thing.

Is anyone else bothered by the sell out of APT cable and network services to Comcast.

Alameda was one of the few places where you had choice in cable providers, and now comcast swallows up yet another local operation and reduces the amount of choice available.

I'd go with Dish and a DSL line, but it looks like DSL is not well supported in Alameda.
