Any of you guys used either of the casual carpool spots -- Webster/Santa Clara or Encinal/Park?
We picked someone up at the Webster spot today -- plenty of people waiting -- but getting through the tube was a nightmare. Any better luck on the other side of town?

Re: casual carpool in alameda
Mon, September 22, 2008 - 4:20 PMI get picked up at Encinal/Park. the trick is to take Broadway to the end then over to Park to get across the bridge, so you miss the Park St traffic. The tube is terrible in the morning.

Mon, September 22, 2008 - 5:04 PMThe tube was a nightmare this morning!
I drive it every day and today it was much worse than normal. When I got to the other side of the tube around 9:20am, there were two cars who had gotten into an accident just outside the tube but had failed to pull off to the shoulder. A cop had them pull over, I passed easily, and there was zero traffic the rest of the way. So if that's when you were driving, that was certainly part of it. -

Re: casual carpool in alameda
Thu, October 2, 2008 - 11:53 PMI started casual carpool (as a passenger, at the Santa Clara/Webster pickup) early this past summer, and, for a brief time, cars were lining up and waiting for passengers.
Then there were lines of passengers and fewer cars, and buses were PACKED; before, you could have two seats to yourself into the City, but sometime this summer, buses were occasional SRO, and it's difficult to remain standing at freeway speeds (even at 8:00 AM the Bridge and its approach are a LOT faster than city traffic).
Then, at about the beginng of September, I started noticing more cars AND packed buses AND traffic has been horrific. Where did all these extra people going to the city coming from?

Thu, October 16, 2008 - 9:01 PMi used to catch rides fairly often off park. in past by the KFC - whats the name of the street - park avenue i think.
also, top of park by the marketplace seems a decent spot - best to take a look at the bus schedule and arrive 5 minutes prior to the scheduled pickup!

Re: casual carpool in alameda
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 8:58 AMWhen I was commuting into San Francisco, I'd poach the bus stops along Santa Clara (I was starting from Santa Clara at Grand), and usually found easy pickings unless I was just behind an O bus. The tube was always bad, but not really any worse than going down to Park then back up 880. That, and the tube never gets blocked by passing boats.
