I was walking by and took the leaftet - and saw the theater managers standing there eying the picketer - so I said loudly "NO WONDER THE FILMS ARE ALWAYS OUT OF FOCUS - THE PROJECTIONISTS ARE NOT UNION!"

I'm not going to boycott it, but I do support the unions.

I bet you have a "support the troops" magnet on the back of your SUV too.

Methinks you've got your wings confused. Kinda like accidentally trying to put your left shoe on your right foot.

I bet you have no idea what you're talking about.

        I win the bet.

You "support the union" but you'll dishonor what they're fighting for and give money to the theater?

How is that a win for you?

Seeing as your initial comment was so incredibly inane, off base and completely incorrect, I wasn't going to answer you, because you obviously are unable to conceive of complexity (ie: I won't boycott the theater, therefore I must have a "support our troops" sticker on my car), but I decided that it was going to be easy enough to poke holes in your theory of relativity.

The truth is that I really am more of an environmentalist, than a union supporter. While I do have IWW stickers on my car, I have more environmental stickers.

Based purely on my bumper sticker real estate: walking to a theater instead of driving to Emeryville or Berkeley is a better expression of my values.

Before the Alameda Theater was opened, I tried to go to the Shattuck Cinema as much as possible, since the whole theater in unionized through the IWW - not just the projectionists. I was at the WTO protests in Seattle, but I was there as an environmentalist, not as a labor activist. I sympathize with the labor movement, and I will support their actions when it doesn't conflict with my other beliefs.

But I digress.... the decision I make to drive, not drive, boycott, not boycott, is mine, and in no way reflects what other beliefs I may hold.

I know there are plenty of rank and file union who would never ever cross a picket line who have a "Support Our Troops" sticker on their cars. The two are not mutually exclusive or hypocritical as you insinuate.

            I win.

I agree that boycotting the theater is likely to run in out of business. Especially because as the weather gets cooler, folks will be more inclined to watch videos from home anyway. Overall is it the intention of the new theater to be of service to our community and to make it less wasteful as we all get stuck in traffic driving to patronize the other theaters of the East Bay.

It might not be perfect (at least not yet) but let's not run the whole project into the ground already. Then what? We'd "win" an empty building sitting there...that doesn't help us, the folks who have worked for years to bring us the theater, OR the projectionists. Plus, the nearby businesses that have agreed to stay open later in the evening wouldd likely also flounder leaving Alamedans with reduced vs. improved nightlife options. Many people would be unintentionally punished.

but I still go back to: paying $10 for a movie that is out of focus. thats the kinda thing that drives people to at home video. I've heard so many people complain about it and how they are disinclined to go back. Ultimately that will kill the business if they don't resolve this union thing soon. The non union people clearly don't have the skills to run the flicks properly.

That's really the point I'm at too. I really want it to be awesome, cause I can walk there from my house, and its so easy, but every time I go there's a problem with the projection. So I bite the bullet and drive to AMC. They really need to fix these issues.
