Theater Propaganda

Went and saw WALL-E at the Alameda Theater last night and was forced to watch a 15 minute propaganda reel. Actually it was two. One was the usual "Welcome to the new restored Alameda Theater please turn off you cell phone, no texting be quiet etc". which I didn't mind. but what followed was ARGH. It some ways it was suppose to be a history lesson, which is kind of cool, but it made it sound like (which they repeated over and over and OVER again) that unless we accept the monolith that is the megaplex the theater would have been torn down. I was getting so annoyed that I nearly walked out of the theater and demanded my money back. If it wasn't WALL-E and just some random movie (which I haven't done in a long time, being tickets at $9.50 a piece) I would have.

(and for opening night for a Pixar movie, it was quiet empty, I guess the novelty of the theater is starting to wane)

New Italian restaurant opening on Webster

Just got this notice from Jeff at Farmstead:

"Acquacotta
I am proud to announce that my friend, colleague, and ex-employee John Couacaud is finally opening his dream restaurant, Acquacotta, 1544 Webster near Lincoln (site of the old Alameda Saloon). (tel: 523-2220)

John has been working on this contemporary Italian eatery for what seems like forever, and his eclectic take on great food is sure to please. He stopped by the other day and let me sample some of his cooking. Mamma Mia, this ex-Oliveto chef can sure cook!!

I particularly loved his take on Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto San Daniele (grilled), the Arancini (fried risotto balls stuffed with Fontina val d'Aosta), and Stracotta di Manzo (a fancy name for some killer pot roast of beef braised in Nebbiolo wine!!) His all-Italian wine list tops out at $40 or so.

He opens next weekend (Friday, 28 March), so run, don't walk to what will definitely be a destination for foodies, Bay Area-wide."

Normally I'm kinda "meh" about Italian restaurants, as I don't care for pasta that much. I'm not eating any carbs at all these days, so I've got to admit the description of the pot roast and asparagus has piqued my interest. And I can walk there!

thinking of moving to Alameda - a few ?s

Hi everyone. I'm thinking of moving to Alameda, from Berkeley. Have toured around the island a bit. Wondering, though, if it's colder or warmer there than Berkeley. (I tend to run cold, and like heat.) One of my friends told me it's often windy and cool. Hard to get a sense today, when it's warm and sunny everywhere.

Also just wondering if I'll get tired of all the driving (I work in SF - not downtown - and also spend a lot of time in Berkeley). But I suppose you all can't really answer that.

The place I'm looking at is on the west side of the island, off Webster.

Thanks.

being attacked on tribe

Don't know what to do about this so I'll just say what's up:

today I recd an obscene rant from someone saying how much they hated me. This is the only group I really post opinion in so I have to assume it came from here, since I really don't post that much on tribe anymore.

basically it said "I think that you are the stupidest bitch on this site, and you post some really stupid shit, and you make me very angry. " What was creepy is that they copied two of my photos and created an new account [Tara Jeannine Delong], with a name similar to what I was using [Tara Umdze} enough so that, if they posted elsewhere, people might think it's me. I had to change my name and photos accordingly.

I contacted tribe to check it out since it borders on impersonation - a violation of tou. However, I just wanted to say to that person, you may not like my opinion, but at least I am not so cowardly as to hide behind brand new profiles to attack someone.

If anyone sees this person posting in a manner that they may be implying they are me, please send me a message. thanks for your help.

This is why I moved out of that hole you idiots are so proud of. It's not a place for progression. You idiots want to hold on to your stupid historic trinkets for the sake of...being idiots.
Sure the town I live in now is a dump as well (castro valley) but at least it has a sports and music program for my children.
You jackoffs would probably LOVE it if every family moved off your island so you morons can be all alone with your cats, your bookstores that nobody goes to and moronic whale stores.

Central Cinema going down... or is it?

Anyone following the strange sorta-demise of the Central Cinema?
First they said that they couldn't get first run films due to the new theater opening, which I find really sad. But now it's that they only can't get "Family" films.
I'm not sure I understand why the distributors would be so specific?

Here's the owner's most recent post. Thoughts?

"Hello Movie Lovers,

Your last day to see "The Forbidden Kingdom" at Central Cinema will be today.

Thanks to those of you who sent me emails with suggestions and support regarding the uncertain future of Central Cinema.
I started Central Cinema with the goal of creating an affordable, family friendly environment. For that reason, we usually play a kids/family movie. However, it is almost certain that we will soon be unable to get newly released kids' movies, and that's too bad because there are some big ones coming out this summer (including a new Pixar movie). We have tried to keep our ticket prices low by booking kids' movies (which simply do better, economically, than other kinds of movies). Our next (and last?) new family movie will be released on May 16. It's confirmed, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" will play at Central Cinema.!!

Therefore, starting this Friday we are raising our adult ticket to $9.00 (I'm really sorry). Our matinee, senior, and children's ticket price will stay at $7.00. Step two in the revamping of our "affordable, family friendly theater" is our booking selection for this Friday. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is an R rated comedy by the creator of "40 Year Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up". It is not appropriate for anyone under 17.

Central Cinema is a neighborhood movie house located at 842 Central Avenue, Alameda, California. The theater's phone # is 510-219-5058. Check us out on the web at www.centralcinema.net or email us at info@centralcinema.net

Has anyone used movers to move from Alameda place to Alameda place?

Once an apartment manager finally says YES, I will be moving soon.

I have friends who are willing to help, but I figure that instead of worrying about their backs and their schedules and who can rent me a truck because I don't have a car and therefore no insurance and blahblahblah, it'd be easier (and not much more expensive, because I'll be obligated to feed my friends!) to just hire movers. Then I can see my friends at a nice housewarming party, where everyone is happy and calm instead of sweaty and under duress.

Has anyone moved within the island? How much stuff did you move, how much did it cost you, would you recommend the moving company you used?

Single Moms?

Hi,
I'm looking to connect with other single moms living in Alameda. I have a 17 mo. old son and I am considering the option of co -housing
with another single mom (or dad) for sharing responsibilities and to make life a little easier! Anyone out there having the same thoughts?
Wish you could go out without hiring a babysitter? Wish someone else would make dinner or do laundry once in awhile? Want to continue to afford living in Alameda?
Connecting regardless of housing would be great too. :)

Rusty, are you still thinking of moving?

CHP lurking near Webster tubes

Here's your PSA for the day:

There's been a motorcycle CHP hiding behind a bush in the mornings, radar aimed at those speeding out of the Webster tube from Oakland. It's really the perfect spot, as drivers can't see him and the 45 MPH speed limit in the tube is really just a guideline. :P

Also, there've been a couple of cars flanking the entrance to the Posey tube, later in the morning or early afternoon.

So watch that lead foot around those tubes!

What's up with the pedestrians just running out in the middle of the street?

Now I understand this town is really really conscious of pedestrians. When half your town is full of senior citizens who will fail dementia tests if they ever tried to get their driver's license again, of course those people aren't going to drive.
No I am not talking about those people.
I am talking about the other half of Alameda. The people who aren't about to die within the next 4 years. The obese mother of 4. The young Alameda High student who is wearing a "dirty blanket" jacket (I believe the youth call them "hoodies"). The guy in his mid-30's wearing a suit.
It doesn't matter who they are, you just jump out in the street.
Even the crosswalks are a funny deal in your town. The way I understood it, you look both ways and then cross. But your town, it's cross and pray to god that it isn't a senior citizen behind the wheel of that Chevette.
I am in your god forsaken dump everyday of the week and once a day, I will have to slam on my brakes because Mrs. Before (the woman in the Nutra System commercial BEFORE the diet) decided to jump into the street. She will even have the nerve to glare at me as if I did something wrong. No lady, it is you that is wrong. 1. You live in this stupid town called Alameda. 2. You're fat.
I had one incident over there near Washington Park where some guy flipped me off because I didn't stop for him at the crosswalk. Even though I was going slower than the posted speed limit of 25. Even though I was almost 5 feet away from the cross walk (too close for me to stop at the crosswalk). Even though had I stopped, I would have had to slam on my brakes since I was way too close to the crosswalk. No, he wanted me to stop and he flipped me off. Now any other city with alot less of the invincibility juice running through their blood wouldn't have cared because I was too close. But in your filthy town? Nope, he wanted me to stop.
I don't understand it either where this mentality comes from. Is it taught in your schools? Do Alameda parents shove this down their children's throats?
I'd actually like to see a statistic about pedestrian's getting hit by cars in your dump. Is it really cars driving above the speed limit or is it pedestrians thinking they're untouchable?
I'd really like to know what is up with the Alameda pedestrians...

Video Maniacs on Park Street - out of business

Looks like Video Maniacs just closed their doors on Park Street in the last few days.

I've not been there in over a month, otherwise I'd have seen the notice that they were shutting down. :(
The note on the window pretty much says the Park Street Business Association ran them out of business.

When I got home, a salesman for Alameda Power & Telecom came to my door to pitch cable sales. We ended up talking about Video Maniacs - the sales guy told me Video Maniacs is suing the city for forcing them out of their old location on Santa Clara Ave to make room for the parking garage. The guy said something about Video Maniacs had signed something that said they had two months to review how sales were going in the Park Street location.
He said that if business was good, then they couldn't sue if the business later failed, so they don't have a case.

Does anyone have any more info on this?

I can see why people don't like Alamedans

Alamedans aren't very friendly to not only outsiders but people with outside ideas. I mean, look at this board for instance. You guys have one guy who has an opinion that you may or may not like troll your board. Now every loudmouth member of this board wants to show who they know in your town (as if it's some sort of "friends" list on myspace and the bigger the list, the more "leet" you are).
Ok let me play your game then. You know who I love? I love the bluecollar family of 5 that was kicked out of their apartment because they were labeled "ghetto" (aka..black). I love my neighbor on Haight ave who had her husband beat on her and the quick responsive Alameda police never showed up (I should know, I called them more than 4 times. I guess if your house is on the West side, you just aren't taken seriously). I love the kids that go to Longfellow. You see, in the town I come from (where people genuinely care about each other instead of well...frontin like they do) the money given to the school district is divided evenly so that every school has equal facilities, books and caliber of teahcers but in YOUR town, it's all in where you live. I've seen the differences all over Alameda.

Oh and moderator, I know my opinion is different so I might suggest running rigorous test to weed out people who don't you know think the way most Alamedans think. You run your tests and people like me won't be able to post on such an elite board.

Alameda logic at work: Target

Now I know some of you's weren't very welcoming to Target being built at southshore. Fine, but replacing Mervyn's with Kohls?!?!?
That is like replacing crap with shit.
From my insider sources though, once a few other stores agree to build on, Target will join up with those stores and build on the base (you guys don't have to worry, it's not on your retard, elitist part of Alameda).
Here's the rule though. I say, all of you people who didn't want target there aren't allowed to use city streets to get there. You guys are going to clog up the traffic for people who genuinely want and NEED to go to Target.
Go to pagano's and buy your stupid flower patterened hammers and stfu.

How about more dance clubs in Alameda?

Are any of you out there wishing that our fair little island had a more vibrant nightlife, especially for folks who love to dance?

Having Rhythmix (the new music and cultural arts center on Blanding) is a great boost to our options. Still there are very few actual nightclubs here. I figure that the police and city planners are probably discouraging and tough to deal with, as well as concerns that a new venue would have enough clientele to stay profitable.

When I look at the as-of-yet-unrented spaces available in the beautiful new "Towne Centre" I really get to wishing we could take advantage of one of the few convenient Alameda locations where a nightclub would be far enough away from the nearest residential buildings to make sound, foot traffic and parking less of an issue.

Do any of you share this dream? How could we go about creating momentum in this direction?

Where can I buy rosewater on the island?

I will be making Kheer (Indian rice pudding, with rosewater and pistachios) for an event at my daughter's school, and I am out of rosewater. I used to get it at Beverages & More at Jack London, but I didn't see it there my last two trips, and it's a pain to get there by public transit, anyway.

This needs to be food-grade rosewater--often times essential oils are not edible!

Does the Alameda Natural Grocery have it? Are there any shops specializing in the foods of certain cultures that have it.

I'd also love to get some orange flower water, if someone knows where on the island I can get it.

Thanks in advance.

Theater opinion

I posted this in the my_island community on livejournal, so if you see it twice sorry.

I wonder...

If your opinion of the theatre project has been swayed since they started building.

ie if you were all for the theatre, and now that you see it's massiveness are you still for it...

or if you were against it and see the parking it going to create are you now for it...

or has it confirmed what ever opinion you had to begin with

...ok, I include myself....I go to the new mini-gym. It's marketed to my exact demo (women 23-45, moms, kinda wussy but trying). So sue me.

But I have to vent for a second....

It's a *circuit* training gym. The whole idea is that you spend one minute on each machine, in a specific order, so that you can get out in 30 minutes.

If you hog a certain machine for 5 minutes, jump out of order with no regard to the rest of us or let your kids play on the machines it kinda fucks up our shit. Seriously, they walk you through the whole routine before you sign the membership deal. It's designed to be simple enough for a mouth-breather to figure out.

I picked this McDonald's-of-fitness approach precisely because I need it to be brainless and quick. You're ruining it for me.

Don't be an eejit. Follow the rules so we can get it over with. Stop wasting my time.

Teenage girl shot and killed in Washington Park

This is so horrible! Alameda's first homicide of the year.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/11/01/BA8DT4LVA.DTL&tsp=1

A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed at an Alameda park during an apparent robbery attempt, police said today.

The girl, an Alameda resident whose name was withheld, was shot at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at Washington Park, located on Central Ave near Webster Street in the island city.

She was with friends when she was shot in the playground area of the park, which is popular among sports enthusiasts and dog owners in the normally tranquil island city. No arrests have been made.

"I am personally stunned and professionally stunned," said Alameda police Lt. Art Fuentes. "I feel that it is a tragedy to lose the life of such a young lady and, as a parent, I couldn't fathom the loss and feelings that her family is going through."

The girl was with about 10 friends at the park when five or six male juveniles whom they didn't recognize approached them in a robbery attempt, Fuentes said.

One of the assailants was armed with a gun and fired five or six shots in an upward motion before firing one last shot that hit the girl in her back, Fuentes said.

"We believe she was in a defensive posture at the time of the shooting," Fuentes said.

One of her friends ran to a nearby officer issuing a traffic citation and told him about the shooting, which has devastated the girl's family and friends. "It's such a raw tragedy," Fuentes said.

The girl was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where she was pronounced dead. The Alameda County coroner is scheduled to conduct an autopsy this morning.

Alameda police cordoned off the area and searched AC Transit bus stops and the 12th Street BART station in downtown Oakland in search of the assailants.

Washington Park is not known for such violence. It is popular for picnics, barbecues, baseball, basketball and its enclosed dog park and is within walking distance to the city's shoreline.

The slaying is Alameda's first homicide of the year. The city reported two killings in 2006, none in 2005 and one slaying in 2004.

An elderly couple caught with more than 200 marijuana plants at their Alameda home mounted the pot-growing operation because they needed cash, according to police. Paul Richard Martinetti, 73, and Suzanne Roberts, 68, were taken into custody on Thursday at their residence on Garfield Avenue.

The arrests follow police securing felony warrants that accuse the couple of cultivating marijuana and possessing marijuana for sale.

Along with the 230 plants, police allegedly found about three pounds of marijuana — packaged and ready to smoke — when they initially visited the property in August after someone reported a strong smell of marijuana in the area. Narcotics officers did not immediately arrest Martinetti and Roberts, however, because they said the case remained under investigation and that they hoped to develop leads that would point them to other marijuana-growing operations.

Inside a detached garage, which was behind the single-family residence, police also said they found a heating and watering system for the plants. The plants measured from a few inches to at least four feet tall. A narcotics officer who asked that his name not be disclosed described it as a "well-organized operation," but not very sophisticated. "He told me that he had run into financial difficulties and that they decided to begin growing marijuana as a way to make cash," the officer said about Martinetti. Along with the marijuana, police said
they seized about $9,000 in cash at the couple's home in the 3200 block of Garfield Avenue, plus a .22 caliber handgun.
Police said both Martinetti and Roberts were taken into custody without incident. Bail for the warrants was set at $20,000.

coastal clean up day

September 15 is Coastal Cleanup Day

The City of Alameda’s Public Works Department announced today the City’s continued participation in one of the largest volunteer events of the year—the 23rd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day. On Saturday, September 15, 2007, starting at 9:00 a.m., residents will have the opportunity to improve the appearance of the Alameda coastline by assisting with the clean up of the Robert Crown Memorial State Beach and the newly opened beach near the Encinal boat ramp. Last year, more than 300 volunteers helped clean up the shoreline and removed 1,485 pounds of debris that could harm the marine ecosystem.

This special event is part of a statewide Coastal Cleanup Program. Each year, more than 40,000 volunteers statewide participate at over 400 cleanup sites. The Coastal Cleanup Project is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, and have fun. The City of Alameda’s Public Works and Recreation and Parks Department are sponsoring this year’s event with the East Bay Regional Parks District. Come join them at one of the largest volunteer events of the year.

Registration staff, located at the Robert Crown Memorial State Beach, will assign volunteers to a start site and be able to assign community service credits to participating Alameda students. Pre-registration is recommended but not required. Coastal Cleanup volunteers are also invited to stay at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach and join in the fun at the after party from noon until 1:00 p.m.

To register to volunteer, be a team captain, or for more information about this event, please call the City of Alameda Public Works Department at (510) 749-5840 or the City of Alameda Recreation and Parks Department at (510) 747-7529.

Contact: For more information, contact Laurie Stoerkel, Program Specialist, 510-749-5840, Public Works Department, Environmental Services Division

Hi,

I'm in a meetup for Ghost Hunting http://ghosts.meetup.com/678/ and I live in Alameda so I'm looking for haunted places in alameda to bring my group to. Does anybody know of one or does anybody have a haunting they'd like to investigate? We are really new but our organizer has been at it for awhile. I guess I'm the newest and I'm hoping to get to do something fun soon.

Thanks,

Children of all ages are invited to participate in the first annual Ladybug Release Party on August 18th hosted by Ploughshares Nursery, 2701 Main St. Alameda.

From noon to 1:30 pm more than 150,000 ladybugs will be let loose at the nursery and given to children to take back to their own garden. In addition there will be ladybug arts and crafts, ladybug poems, a talk by a ladybug expert, and a ladybug coloring contest.

Directions to the Nursery are available online at www.ploughsharesnursery.com or by calling (510)898-7811. There is no charge for the event, but donations are welcome and participants are asked to bring a small jar for transporting ladybugs back home.

Ploughshares Nursery is an environmentally sustainable business run by and for formerly homeless residents of the Alameda Point Collaborative. The nursery specializes in California native, edible, and climate appropriate plants. Many of the plants sold at Ploughshares Nursery are difficult to find at other retail nurseries. Ploughshares Nursery is open to the public every week, Wednesday though Sunday from 9:00am to 5:30pm.

Alameda Point Collaborative is a supportive housing program serving 500 formerly homeless families and individuals on the converted Naval Air Station. Residents are provided with the safety and stability of a place to live combined with life skills and job skills training, advocacy to connect with services, and emotional support all with the ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness and getting the support needed to be able to lead a stable, productive life.

I had the most random dream last night about that red house that was converted into a flag and map store. I never went in and hadn't thought about it for years and years. So it got me wondering what was the history of that place, who was the owner, and what ever happened to it? Its sad that its gone now that I'm in a point where I'm doing more travelling around the U.S. its a place I would have loved to frequent. I'd much rather buy maps from a local business than get them from the AAA office, anyhow.

Have any of you had previous experiences with her care? What did you think? I liked how she sounded on the phone and made an appointment based on that, but some additional info--recommendations--warnings(?) would be great.
THANKS!

Alameda dog owners, please be responsible when walking your dog and pick up after them.

I have a dog. I have no yard, so I have to walk my dog around town so he can relieve himself, and as a responsible dog owner, I always pick up after my dog. While walking my dog, I can't help but notice pile after pile of dog poop which some irresponsible dog owner left to stink up the neighborhood and attract flies. It also makes all dog owners look bad.

Please, help keep Alameda beautiful, and be responsible for your dog's waste.

watermelon rock 4 ever!

from the news: http://www.baycrossings.com/news_archive_view_next.asp?id=394&mon=2&yea=2003

Just a mile or so out of Alameda, you’ll find it…..there on Doolittle Drive, just before you get to Swan Way. It’s been there for years and years, or at least for the 27 years that I’ve lived here, but its origins have always been a mystery.

My kids used to make a game of being the first to spot it on the edge of the water on the way to the Oakland Airport or coming home from Costco. Sometimes you can’t see it at all because the water line is high enough to obscure it. Most of the time though, it’s quite easy to spot. It’s currently bright pink again, with the customary black tear-drop spots and green rind. The Oakland/Alameda estuary boasts this delightful slice of concrete fruit along an otherwise desolate edge of water.

It could well be my imagination, although I seem to think that I once saw this perfect half-crescent shaped piece of concrete prior to someone delivering the watermelon baby. I thought, "Wouldn’t it look cool if someone painted it to look like a huge slice of watermelon?" Low and behold, weeks later someone did exactly that.

The watermelon has been there for years in varying stages of color. That’s a great part of this mystery, for somebody actually tends to it from time to time. A couple of years ago, the color was fading, which seemed appropriate for a real piece of fruit rotting and returning to the earth. I hadn’t quite accepted the watermelon’s demise and thought I might repaint it myself. One day, I even stopped on the apron of the road with my three kids to check it out. I discovered my foolhardiness (and someone else’s bravery) when, with traffic whizzing by alongside me, I tried to ease down the rocky slope to reach the faded fruit. Treacherous footing with the murky estuary water awaiting a wrong step sent me scurrying back to my car dragging my kids behind me. If the watermelon was to live again, somebody else would have to see to its rebirth.

Shortly thereafter, the mysterious waterfront artist returned to give the slice its life back! I remember being so happy that it was bright pink again and actually looked forward to catching a glimpse of it on my commute home from work. Imagine my surprise when just days after the "rebirth," a new entrepreneur painted ugly dark green moss all over one edge of it. I began to think that there must be dueling artists at work here. Yet, I still marvel at the feat of not only reaching the watermelon but carrying painting supplies to it as well. Jet skiers and crew teams seem to have good opportunities to reach the watermelon on high water days though I suspect that the real artist waits until the melon is entirely exposed (see photo). I must not have been alone in my dissatisfaction with the latest moss rendering as the watermelon returned to its fresh pink splendor less than a month later.

The watermelon is now signed with the dates of its repainting rather than an artist’s name. The mystery remains as to the identity of the painter(s). With the recent stormy weather, there have been days when only a green piece of rind peaks out of the water, but when the sun shines, the famous roadside fruit is there to delight and surprise all passing motorists.

(Just down the way, closer to Langley Road, the same artist(s?) painted the Swiss cheese rock. The rock was easier to get to, so I was tempted to redo its coloring as the yellow was fading fast. When I went to look for it though, I couldn’t find it. I’m afraid the cheese rock is gone, a victim of the recent widening of Doolittle Road.)

Does any one know about an accident on High street (by Lincoln Park) on Friday about 3:45? I was driving home an all traffic was being diverted off High Street. I caught a quick sight and it looked like a white truck with a little child's bike underneath and a man detained with handcuffs. I can't be sure that is what I saw, but it did look like it. I see nothing in on the paper's websites.

The warehouses at Oak and Blanding are burning, though the fire ay be under control by now.

Maybe they could put Target there? Get Target to pay for left-turn arrows at Blanding, Clement, and Buena Vista onto Park, and that would mitigate the traffic impacts, and we wouldn't have Oaklanders driving across town to get to Target.

Park St Parking, watch out!

Last night we ate on Park St and was about to park in the BoA parking. We walked up to the pay stall ($3 flat fee after 6 PM) to find a bunch of people with parking tickets in hand trying to read the fine print on the sign.

It seems last night, despite people paying, the meter maid was on a ticketing frenzy. I feel bad for those people because they can't prove they paid.

Well we ended up parking on the street, but will NEVER try to park in BoA after seeing that.

So today, Wednesday the 30th, is the last full day.
The store is at 1910A Encinal Avenue in Alameda, and will be open from 1-6 PM

Paintings range from $7 - $25, and furniture is still available, including antique dining tables with 6 chairs for only $300 for the set (reasonable offers will be considered.).

Cash only, and it would be brilliant if people brought their own bags.

Wondering if there is a creative-writing group that already meets on the island? If there is, could they let me know when and where it meets. If there isn't, would someone/s who is/are like to write creatively (either poetry, short stories, novels) be interested in helping me form and be part of such a group? And is there anyone on the island working on/doing independent/art film? I do not own a camera, but I would love to do either some film writing/directing and/or maybe photography (if someone could supply the camera).

Thanks.
Alameda may put phone service on hold
Officials wary despite public interest in digital combination
By Kelly Rayburn, STAFF WRITER
Inside Bay Area

ALAMEDA — A new survey shows a majority of Alamedans like the notion of having the city's public utility offer telephone service, but officials remain cautious about the idea.

The key question is whether boosted revenues would cover startup and operating costs associated with offering telephone service in conjunction with cable and Internet connections, which Alameda Power & Telecom already provides.

"I've got to see the numbers," said John McCahan, a member of the Public Utilities Board. "The numbers have to hunt."

Maryland-based CCG Consulting recommended AP&T move into the telephone market as a way to help the utility's debt-ridden telecom division, which has been forced to borrow $44 million from AP&T's electric side in a seven-year period since the utility moved into the cable and Internet business.

Officials say they don't want to repeat past mistakes. "We don't have a history of prediction and execution that is excellent," McCahan said.

Still, the $6,000 survey — also conducted by CCG Consulting for $6,000 — indicates Alamedans are open to an AP&T telephone venture.
Fifty-seven percent said AP&T should offer such services, with an additional 26 percent saying "maybe" it should.

It also found that 56 percent would change their current telephone service if AP&T offered services at a lower rate than competitors.

The survey was based on conversations with 376 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.02 percent.

AP&T spokesman Matt McCabe said the survey results were encouraging, but said the they are "one element in a much bigger investigation" into telephone services.

"There is an openness to the idea of going into voice services — or at least looking into it," he said. "Whether or not that translates into staff making a recommendation to the board, I don't know. Only time will tell — time and alot of hard work."

McCabe said if a recommendation on voice is made, it won't be before late summer.

There would be two basic options for getting into the telephone market.

One would be for the utility to purchase a softswitch, a computer software-based telephone switching program, to operate the system.

That would require an up-front investment ranging from $300,000 to $700,000.

A second option would be for AP&T to partner with a private business.

Such a venture would likely involve lower start-up costs, but could limit the financial boost as the utility would enter into a revenue-sharing arrangement with the private company.

Officials stressed that the question over telephone service is only one aspect of the ongoing effort to turn the telecom division's finances around.

Public Utilities Board president Ann McCormick said, for example, that a more immediate priority for her is getting more people to sign up for the existing cable and Internet services.

Board member Peter Holmes said "speed and tenacity" were important in solving AP&T's challenges, but said the telephone option needed to be weighed carefully.

"I don't think anyone on the board or on staff wants to make any kind of rash or overly bold moves to solve telecom's woes at this time," he said.
